Professional rugby league player, Joel Thompson, has played more than 230 first grade games in the National Rugby League. In 2020, he captained the Indigenous All-Stars Team. He says he’s used his “tough childhood” as a superpower. In this episode, you’ll hear Joel talk about going to school hungry, how he was heading in a direction of crime, as well as the difficulties he had in handling the high-pressure environment of sport when he didn’t have the mental strategies to cope. Joel’s is a story of how a “troubled kid” grabbed hold of the good people around him, such as his Nan and wife, Amy, along with others from his childhood, who stepped in to drive him to games, for example, when his family wasn’t able to do so … and how he’s healed, by giving back and helping others kids, just like he once was, through The Mindset Project.
